As an Immigrant, one cannot afford to be living in a sleepless slumber. Immigrants must become aware of their rights and assert them. Carpe diem! Too often immigrants hold on to nationalist ideals of their home country although clearly living the American dream. They for example, refuse to attain full citizenship in instances where they may very well be entitled to citizenship.
By now, each and every newspaper worth reading has at least one article on the various executive actions taken by the Trump administration in relation to immigration law and policy. While some may take comfort in thinking that such actions will only ever affect persons from the seven or now sixMuslim countries, history has shown that a nation starting a purge first scapegoats few before turning attention to the many.
In practical terms, this simply means, when your neighbor’s house is of fire, wet yours. Wet mine? How can I with all this craziness taking place? The answer is simple;immigrants must take responsibility for their actions. For example, why should an Antiguan try to justify migrating to the US since the 80’s on a Green-card and still being a green card holder in 2017? How can one rationalize being a US citizen of Dominican birth with two grown children to an undocumented fiancé to whom they are in a loving relationship, but have not gotten married and not adjusted their fiancés status? Why should you be undocumented walking the streets of Brooklyn smoking a split?
Immigrants must be real. Stop hiding behind the curtains, stop living in fear, know your rights and exert them. Consult an immigration attorney about applying for citizenship.
Get rid of this idea that if your friend filled on her own, you can. Let’s remember that each circumstance is unique.
If you don’t take your own time to walk fast, who else will?
