PARAMARIBO, Suriname, A delegation from the Brazilian state of Roraima has ended a visit here, expressing a willingness to strengthen the existing relationship with Suriname in the field of trade and production.

The delegation, led by Governor Antonio Denarium, also held talks with President Chandrikapersad “Chan” Santoshi. The visit here follows a similar one led by Agriculture, Livestock & Fisheries Minister Parmanand Sewdien to Roraima earlier this year.

Roraima is located in the north of Brazil and is viewed as an excellent potential partner for Suriname in bilateral trade and production, opening a gateway to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and European Union markers, according to a press release from the state-owned Suriname Communication Service (SCS).

It said during the visit, extensive discussions were held regarding the ongoing trade between Roraima and Suriname, in which soybean meal and oil, as well as fruit pulp, are exported to Suriname.

Observers here note that because of CARICOM’s goal to reduce food import costs by 25 percent by 2025, Suriname and Guyana, with Brazil as a strategic partner, will have to play a prominent role in order to achieve this.

The visit here has ended with several agreements, including technical and practical training, whereby Suriname has been given the opportunity to send ten farmers to Roraima to be trained in the industrial cultivation of various agricultural raw materials.

In addition, there is also agreement for the further development of land, air, and sea routes for passenger and goods traffic, as well as to develop of essential agricultural projects through a private-public partnership.

Roraima has also expressed an interest in investing in both the gas and hydropower sectors.
