Police in Hong Kong have discovered 225 kg of cocaine in boxes of scrap metal from Suriname.

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – Law enforcement officials in Hong Kong say two men will appear in court on Monday after 225kg of cocaine had been discovered in a warehouse. The authorities said that the drugs came from Suriname.

The drugs, with a street value of US$25 million, were discovered in the warehouse during a raid by the authorities, and the officials say this is the largest cocaine seizure in Hong Kong this year.

RTHK News reported that the drugs were hidden in containers with scrap iron from the Dutch-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country and that the drugs were intended to be temporarily stored in Ping Che before being distributed to other countries.

Last month, the Surinamese police intercepted 50 kilograms of cocaine hidden in car parts that were to be shipped to Hong Kong via Nigeria.

In January 2022, the police in Hong Kong also seized more than 135 kilograms of cocaine from Suriname. The drugs were hidden in a container with frozen meat.

Hong Kong carries severe penalties for large-scale trafficking of dangerous drugs, including life imprisonment and a multi-million dollar monetary fine.
