On Friday afternoon(1.25.19) President Donald Trump announced from the Rose Garden, that the history-making (35-day) shut down of the Government was being (temporarily) shuttered.
–The Government was re-opened via a time-buying continuing resolution that will keep that re-opening in force until February 15th., while a joint Committee from the two layers of Congress seek to frame an acceptable compromise.
Some journalists; commentators; analysts; talk-show hosts; op-Ed writers….etc. are contending that the President hastily terminated the shut-down, because(i).. he wanted to turn attention away from the arrest of his long-time associate, Roger Stone; and/or (ii).. He was anxious to enjoy the vanity of delivering the annual State of the Union address.
Whatever the real reasoning(s) might be for the President discontinuing the shut-down, the post-mortems are painting bleak pictures for the White-House Principals, as well as dismal prognoses for the Republicans at the 2020 Presidential and other electoral races.
RESULTS
One of the principal criticisms and condemnations being heaped on the President, is that he caved in to end the 35-day-old U.S. government shutdown without getting the $5.7 billion wall along the southern border that he was demanding from the U.S Congress.
Besides, (i).. the President’s approval rate has sunk to 37%; (ii).. 23-28% of the population feels that the President is taking the country in the wrong direction; and (iii).. a recent poll has reported that a majority of those surveyed felt that Democrat-Nancy Pelosi was a better Administrator than the President.
Journalists–Gina Salamone and Leonard Greene are reporting that the five-week Government shut-down has cost the U.S. economy $11 Billion, including $3 Billion in economic activity that can never be recovered.
As furloughed Federal workers returned to their jobs, and the Governmet scrambled to issue them back pay,…Budget and Economy analysts are concluding that “the 35 day stalemate that left 800,000 Government employees without pay checks for two pay periods, had caused irreparable (financial) harm to the U.S. economy.”
The shutdown which began on December 22nd.was believed to have been prompted by conservative commentators who felt that the President should have abided by the campaign pledges that he had made to his base of supporters around immigration.
The shutdown, which pitted Speaker Nancy Pelosi against President Donald Trump, was the Speaker’s first test since assuming the Speakership position in early January for the second time.
Minority leader Chuck Schumer, the top democrat in the Senate, has said that he hoped that the experience would be a “lesson learned, for Trump and his party…..that it is self-defeating to shut down the government over policy disputes.”
True to their belief, Democrats remained united and unyielding in their opposition to provide money for what they dubbed “Trump’s wall”, one of his signature campaign promises.
However, Trump has stated that his about-face is in no way a retreat, but simply to stop the pain and suffering that were hurting the 800,000 furloughed Government employees and their families.
The three-week agreement reached with congressional leaders was quickly passed by the Senate and the House without opposition and signed by the President….It paved the way for the government to remain open in order for U.S lawmakers to address security along the U.S.-Mexican border.
But Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated plainly that any compromise would not include money for a new border wall, which Democrats viewed as ineffective and overly costly. It has also made it possible for Mr.Trump to deliver his State of the Union address to Congress, which Ms. Pelosi had prevented him from doing during the shutdown.
Finally, Personnel inside and outside of the United States of America are now anxiously waiting to see what is going to happen by February 15th. in terms of wether the Governmental shut-down was going to be resumed, or endure.
IN OTHER WORDS:
