NAIROBI, Kenya, CMC—President William Ruto has welcomed Thursday’s swearing-in of Haiti’s transitional presidential Council (CPT), promises security, justice, and economic recovery in the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.

“The swearing-in of the Transitional Presidential Council (TPC) is crucial in Haiti’s political transition. The TPC has the singular task of rushing to re-establish key organs of the State critical to restoring law and order and ushering hope to all Haitians as prescribed by the Decree of April 12, 2024,” Ruto said in a statement.

President Ruto emphasized Kenya’s unwavering commitment to Haiti’s stability, stating, “In implementing the roadmap contained in this political accord, Kenya stands ready and willing- in concert with a broad alliance of nations in Africa and CARICOM- committed to Haiti’s stability, to rapidly execute the security support infrastructure envisaged under UN Security Council 2699 (2023).” This reassurance underscores Kenya’s dedication to supporting Haiti during this critical period.

Last month, Kenya and Haiti signed an agreement allowing the African country to lead a United Nations Security Council-sanctioned Multinational Security Mission (MSS) to restore peace and security in Haiti.

Last October, the UN Security Council authorized the deployment of the MSS to back Haiti’s beleaguered police force, which Kenya offered to lead. A 2022 sanctions regime targeting gang leaders and their financiers was also renewed.

Besides Kenya and Mali, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Antigua, and Barbuda say they are willing to assist the MSS.

” Kenya assures the TPC of Haiti of its full support as it shepherds the country through this complex interregnum,” Ruto said.

On Thursday evening, the regional integration CARICOM issued a statement welcoming the formal installation of the CPT.

The formal installation of the nine-member Council, as stated by CARICOM, “marks a significant achievement through a process driven by Haitians in the interest of Haiti. It also represents a critical step forward for both the Council and the Haitian people in addressing the protracted multidimensional crisis afflicting the country.” This significant development should inspire hope and a sense of progress in the audience.

“This is an opportunity to craft a new beginning which will give all Haitians renewed hope for a return to constitutional government, stability, and sustained development,” CARICOM said.
