KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Jamaica government Tuesday said it is yet to determine the nationalities of the two people found dead in the landing gear compartment of a JetBlue aircraft at a South Florida airport.

There has been speculation that the bodies are of Jamaican nationals, but Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister, Kamina Johnson Smith, said the matter remains unclear.

“While there is speculation regarding the nationalities of the persons found, our information to date is that this matter remains unclear, and there is no immediate basis on which to conclude that they are Jamaicans,” Johnson Smith said in a statement posted on X, formerly

In a statement, JetBlue said that the bodies were discovered in the wheel well area during a routine post-flight inspection on Monday night at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, shortly after it arrived from John F Kennedy International Airport in New York.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday that paramedics declared both people dead at the scene. In its statement, JetBlue said, “At this time, the identities of the individuals and the circumstances surrounding how they accessed the aircraft remain under investigation,” JetBlue said.

Johnson Smith said Jamaica remains in contact with the relevant authorities and will “update the public as soon as greater clarity and accuracy has been brought to bear on this tragic matter.”

The National Transportation Safety Board, which is not investigating the matter, said in a statement Tuesday that it appears there was “no involvement of the flight crew or operation of the airplane.”
