BRIDGETOWN, Barbados– Hurricane, under-experienced jockey Antonio Bishop, won the 72nd running of the Barbados Guineas on Monday at the Garrison Savannah.

The three-year-old bay colt, a son of Storm Arrow out of Angelic Peace by 2003 Barbados Gold Cup winner Thady Quill, led a clean sweep of the top three positions for the owner-trainer combination of Gay Smith and Edward Walcott.

Hurricane defied late challenges in the U.S. $18,000 feature race from two of three other Springfield Stables contenders – Jaguar, ridden by Anderson Trotman, and Pussykat, under Dario Dalrymple – to cover 1,570 meters in one minute, 41 seconds flat.

The 4-1 choice remained in close contention throughout the trip before Bishop split the front-runners – The Code, under Delano Lopez, and Princess Julia, ridden by Rey Williams – at the top of the home straight.

Jaguar and Pussykat brought pressure to bear on their stablemate in the final 200 meters, but Hurricane held under a drive to finish 1 ½ length clear to claim his second win in three starts.

Rickey Walcott, the 2003 Canadian Derby-winning jockey and 2007 champion jockey in the Canadian province of Alberta, logged two wins on the eight-race Labour Day holiday card, which brought the first season of racing of Barbados Turf Club to a close.

He won the U.S. $8,500 first race aboard Rio Ponti, owned by Trinidadians Steve and Allan Madoo, and the U.S. $8,500 last race astride Inspired Adventure.

Veteran trainer Richard Deane also had a memorable day when he landed a hat-trick of wins, saddling Sarah in the U.S. $ 6,750-second race, Life Is Great in the U.S. $7,500 third race, and Gold Star in the U.S. $6,750 fourth race.
