PORT AU PRINCE, CMC—The Ministry of Defense has reaffirmed its commitment to providing the Haitian Armed Forces (FADH) with the necessary means to defend the country’s territorial integrity after a contingent of soldiers left here last weekend for the French island of Martinique.

The ministry said the 25 soldiers would undergo a two-week specialized training course within the 33rd Marine Infantry Regiment (RIM).

It said this initiative is part of defense cooperation between Haiti and France to strengthen the operational skills of Haiti’s security forces. This is the second cohort of Haitian soldiers to go to this French overseas territory as part of the program, following the first batch in November 2014

“These strategic partnerships demonstrate valuable international solidarity for the rise of the Haitian armed forces,” said the Minister of Defence, Jean-Michel Moïse.

“I highly appreciate the support of France and its Ambassador Antoine Michon in rebuilding our army. France provides valuable training to our troops,” he added.

Moïse said that discussions are also taking place with several other countries.

“Mexico also provides decisive support by training military personnel with exemplary commitment, and we express our deep gratitude to them,” he said, adding that “Argentina is also actively participating in this effort by putting their military expertise at the service of our soldiers.

“In addition, a major cooperation agreement has just been concluded with Colombia, marking a significant step forward in the development of our country’s defense capabilities,” he said, noting that the United States, for its part, is closely monitoring the security situation in Haiti “and is also committed to supporting us.”
