GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) Wednesday appealed to citizens to make their premises safe against the risks of fires after a 43-year-old perished in the latest fire to engulf a dwelling home since the start of the year.

The GFS said people should equip homes and businesses with fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and smoke alarms.

The GFS said that the latest fire occurred at Port Mourant on Tuesday night and that two buildings were destroyed.

It said the fire began in a one-story wooden and concrete house owned by 43-year-old Asti Deoaarran of the United States and occupied by 43-year-old Tookant Deoaarran.

“As a result of the fire, Tookant Deoaarran perished, and the building and its contents were destroyed,” the GFS said, adding that a two-story building in the same compound occupied by a 75-year-old woman was also destroyed.

The GFS said that it is investigating the cause of the blaze.

On Monday, the GFS said that a fire that destroyed a house at La Grange, West Bank Demerara, leaving nine people homeless, was due to a child playing with a lighter.

It said the child, who was left unattended, had a lighter on a chair, and after the object sparked, naked flames fell onto a chair, resulting in the fire.
