BROOKLYN, NY – Jamaica, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago registered deaths linked to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on Tuesday as health authorities in those countries continued to urge their nationals to be vaccinated as one of the measures aimed at curbing the spread of the virus.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness reported that six Jamaicans became the latest COVID-19 fatalities, pushing the island’s virus death toll to 1800. Five of the victims were from St Elizabeth, including three females ranging in ages from 51 to 74 years old.
The ministry said that 374 new virus cases were recorded over the past 24 hours, pushing the number of confirmed cases to 80,780 since the first case was reported in March last year.
The new cases comprise 229 females and 145 males with ages ranging from six months to 95 years, the ministry said, adding that there have been 190 further recoveries and putting that total to 51,121.
Seven hundred eight persons are hospitalized, with 146 moderately ill, 104 severely sick, and 42 critically ill.
There are 27,316 active cases on the island.
In Guyana, five unvaccinated people died from COVID-19, pushing the death toll for September so far to 113 and the overall figure to 738 since the first case in March last year.
September 2021 is the only month to record the highest number of deaths and infections. The Ministry of Health, in a statement, noted that all five patients – three women and two men – died while receiving care at medical institutions.
Guyana on Tuesday also recorded 141 new COVID cases, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 29 824; the new infections were recorded from 1 492 tests.
The ministry said that the new cases in all of the 10 Regions and that a breakdown reveals that more women than men are being infected.
There are 30 patients in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit at the Infectious Diseases Hospital; 155 patients are in institutional isolation and 3, 525 are in home isolation.
To date, 25 376 persons have recovered from the virus.
Trinidad and Tobago recorded four deaths and 197 new positive cases over the last 24 hours. The Ministry of Health said that three males and one female with comorbidities succumbed to the virus, pushing the overall total to 1 426.
There are 4,003 active cases, with 48 826 people testing positive for the virus since March last year.
In addition, there have been 43 397 recoveries and 288 patients in hospital, 153 in state-sanctioned quarantine facilities, and 3 452 in home isolation.
