GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Guyana says it will use its attendance at the November Group of Twenty (G20) Summit in Brazil to champion forest conservation and more significant incentives for forested-rich countries.

The G20 Summit, scheduled for November 18-19, will bring together leaders of the countries that represent 85 percent of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP), more than 75 percent of world trade, and around two-thirds of the world’s population.

Guyana has been invited to the summit, and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo said that environmental diplomacy is essential to the country’s foreign policy.

“I probably will attend to argue that this could be done in a manner that doesn’t burden the world but provides enormous climate benefits to the entire world.

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo plans to present a unique approach at the G20 Summit. He envisions a ‘menu’ of options for countries to choose from, including market mechanisms and public resources, all designed to provide significant climate benefits without burdening the world.

Earlier this month, Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat represented Guyana at the United Nations Forests Forum in New York. His call for greater urgency in global forest conservation efforts was well-received, highlighting Guyana’s active role in this crucial issue.

Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS2030) was highlighted at the forum. This blueprint sets out a model of how Guyana can balance economic development alongside conserving the country’s forests and biodiversity while being compensated.
