ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC—The leader of the main opposition New National Party (NNP), Emmalin Pierre, has called for an investigation into a leaked video showing a parliamentarian scrolling her mobile phone last month with the caption claiming she was shopping on a popular site.
The incident is reported to have occurred during the January 28th sitting, and the video disseminated on social media platforms shows Kate Lewis-Peters scrolling her mobile phone.
Addressing a public meeting on Sunday, Pierre, a member of the House Committee, said she would officially request to Speaker Leo Cato that an investigation be carried out and the culprit banned from attending parliamentary sittings.
“The worst place that such an invasion of privacy could have taken place is in the Parliament of this country, and so tonight, I want to announce…that this team NNP will raise this issue, and we will not stop until it is properly investigated and action is taken.
“I go on to say that the person who is caught guilty must be banned from returning to the House of Parliament,” she told the meeting in the town of the western parish of St John’s.
“We cannot treat so lightly the people’s House, and so we will be making a call for the Speaker of the House to do an urgent swift investigation and to provide publicly the findings of this investigation,” she said while expressing solidarity with Lewis-Peters.
“We have to stand in solidarity with ourselves because we don’t know what was taken before,” she added.
The representative for the Labour Movement in the Senate, Andre Lewis, also expressed his concern about the video, saying that he has already informed the President of the Upper House that he will be conducting his research into the incident.
