BROOKLYN, NY – Donovan Wilson received an early birthday present by firing home the only goal as English National League leaders Sutton United recorded a seventh win in eight matches by beating King’s Lynn Town 1-0 on Saturday.
Wilson, who turned 24 Sunday, marked his maiden start for Matt Gray’s men by helping them move a step closer to promotion to League Two after going on loan from National League South Outfit Bath City, whose season ended early of the coronavirus pandemic.
The goal arrived in the 55th minute when King’s Lynn lost possession in a dangerous area, and Wilson, who is eligible to represent Jamaica, made them pay with his first for Sutton.
It was a third straight defeat for relegation-threatened King’s Lynn, who have picked up just five points from their last 10 games.
In Scotland, fifth-placed Livingston recorded a 2-1 victory over relegation-threatened Hamilton Academical with 30-year-old Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, who is of St Lucian and Dominican descent, setting them on their way.
The big striker’s stylish volley gave the hosts a 16th-minute lead as he put the finishing touches to Livingston’s opener, but Nicky Devlin did the spadework.
The full-back worked his way into the box from the right and slipped the ball to the striker with his back to goal, and Emmanuel-Thomas flicked it up before smashing into the net behind him.
