FOOTBALL-Clarke-Harris brace in vain as Posh suffer upset in League Cup

LONDON, CMC – Reggae Boy Jonson Clarke-Harris scored a brace but then missed a penalty in a decisive shootout, as Peterborough were knocked out of the EFL Cup by League Two Mansfield Town on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old netted in the 30th and 47th minute to put the League One visitors 2-1 up at Field Mill in the East Midlands before Lucas Akins’s added penalty left the third-round contest tied at 2-2.

Clarke Harris and Ronnie Edwards had their spot kicks saved by goalkeeper Christy Pym. At the same time, Akins and Jordan Bowery scored for the hosts before Davis Keillor-Dunn scored the decisive penalty to secure their side’s passage to the next round.

Peterborough, nicknamed the Posh, fell behind in the fifth minute when Will Swan converted from the spot, but in-form Clarke-Harris leveled on the half-hour mark with a well-taken free kick to leave the game squared at the half.

Just moments after the resumption, Clarke-Harris finished from close range to give the Posh the upper hand before they conceded late on and then lost their nerve in the penalty shoot-out.

In another upset, Jamaica hopeful Demetri Mitchell scored the winner for Exeter. Still, he was sent off as League One Exeter stunned Premier League side Luton Town 1-0 at St James Park.

The 26-year-old finished at the back post in the 83rd minute from substitute Yanic Wildschut’s cross but got his marching orders five minutes later for a second yellow.

In the National League, Grenada international Kairo Mitchell netted his fourth of the season, but Rochdale slumped to a 2-1 defeat to Chesterfield.

Playing at home at Spotland Stadium, Rochdale found themselves trailing after only six minutes through Armando Dobra before Mitchell canceled the strike-out seven minutes later when he got on to the end of George Nevett’s through-ball to beat goalkeeper Harry Tyrer with a nerveless finish.

However, the visitors had the final say, Tom Naylor’s header proving too much for Rochdale custodian Louie Moulden in the 25th.
