Salary hike approved for government employees

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The Public Service Union (PSU) says public sector workers are to receive a 3 percent salary increase from July 1 this year.

“For the last triennium, the government will pay public officers. We have negotiated and concluded salary negotiations. The last year of the triennium begins on the 1st of July. So from July 1, public officers will get a three per cent salary increase,” said PSU general secretary Thomas Letang, adding that it will be for the period ending in June of 2027.

He said that the union will enter into negotiations for 2027-2030, adding, “It does mean that we have to wait until the end of the financial year for us to negotiate”.

Letang announced that the PSU will hold its 13th Biennial Delegates Conference on Wednesday evening.

“So as soon as our conference is over, we will start putting things in place for us to start negotiating. But if there is one thing we want to do this time, it is to make sure that we negotiate on time, because the longer you stay before negotiation, the more difficulty you encounter in negotiating.”

Letang said he expects at least 100 delegates to attend the conference, which will be held under the theme “Investing in Ourselves, Organizing for Workers’ Rights and Benefits.”

“We believe at this point people have to invest in themselves, whether you are members of the union, as employees, we have to invest. We have to organize because there are so many things going on in the world. We have the effect of wars. Even in Dominica right now, we are feeling the effect with the rising cost of petrol,” Letang said, adding that public sector workers are feeling the impact of these situations.

He said that Sandra Massiah, the Sub-Regional Secretary for Public Service International, will address the conference.
