ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC -Dominica has called for an end to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war urging both countries to find a “peaceful resolution” to the war that has left thousands of people dead.

On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded and occupied parts of Ukraine in a significant escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which had begun in 2014. The invasion has instigated Europe’s largest refugee crisis since World War II.

Speaking at a ceremony where he accepted the credentials of Sergey Petrovic as the new Russian ambassador to Dominica, President Charles Savarin said Roseau was “particularly mindful” of the war and “ a wider conflagration.

“We urge all parties to work assiduously to end the fighting and find a peaceful resolution.”

Charles said Dominica recognizes the importance of Russia as one of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

“Russia’s position on major international issues is of great significance to us as small island developing states (and) we, therefore, look forward to the growing presence of the Russian Federation on the Caribbean region and to the further strengthening of relations, both bilaterally and multilaterally in dealing with the problems confronting small island developing states, more particularly the devastating effects of climate change, COVID-19 and a rising incidence of crime and violence, all of which threaten our sustainable and development and peaceful way of life.”

Savarin said Dominica, which established diplomatic relations with Russia in 1995, could benefit from that relationship in several areas, including human resource development, biodiversity, education, sports, energy science, and technology.

Savarin said Russia was also looking to deepen its relations with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
