HAVANA, Cuba, CMC—Cuba has been elected a member of the World Health Assembly General Committee, a body made up of 17 nations that decides on the institution’s performance.

The World Health Assembly is the World Health Organization’s decision-making body. It develops policies, appoints the General Director, supervises financial policies, and considers and approves program budget projects.

The Cuban delegation at the 78th World Health Assembly, headed by Health Minister Jose Angel Portal, met with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the general director of that entity.

He also held bilateral meetings with other health ministers, including Lei Haichao, China’s acting minister of the National Health Commission.

The World Health Assembly focuses on adopting over 40 resolutions, including the Treaty on Future Pandemics.

The forum’s agenda includes debates on the budget project for programs for the period 2026-2027, which is in tune with the 14th General Working Program of the World Health Organization, the organization’s global health strategy for that period.
