CRICKET-UPDATE 1 India tightens grip after Windies lower order collapse

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – India was tightening their grip on the second Test after wrapping up West Indies’ innings quickly and then dominating the pre-lunch session with the bat on the penultimate day of the contest at Queen’s Park Oval here Sunday.

At the break, the tourists were 98 for one, an overall lead of 281 runs, after dismissing the hosts for 255 in their first innings inside the first hour.

Captain Rohit Sharma then lashed a rapid 57 from 44 deliveries with five fours and three sixes, as he and Yashasvi Jaiswal plundered 98 from 71 deliveries in an entertaining opening stand.

At lunch, Jaiswal was unbeaten on 37 and partnered by Shubman Gill, who was yet to score after Rohit perished in the last over before the interval.

Resuming from their overnight 229 for five, West Indies disappointingly lost their last five wickets for 26 runs to concede a first-innings lead of 183 runs.

Left-hander Alick Athanaze failed to add to his overnight 37 as seamer Mohammed Sirjan picked up four of the wickets to fall to finish with five for 60.
