PROVIDENCE, Guyana, CMC – Liam Dawson smashed a six off the penultimate ball of the match to guide the Hampshire Hawks to an exciting victory over the Rangpur Riders in the ExxonMobil Global Super League’s (GSL) first-ever Super Over on Wednesday.

It was a thrilling finale to the tournament’s second game after both sides scored 132 runs from their 20 overs.

Hawks’ captain, Chris Wood, opted to bowl the crucial over, and despite being hit for a six by Khushdil Shah, he only conceded 12 runs from his six overs.

Needing 13 runs to win, the Hawks’ James Fuller hammered Zak Chappell’s first ball for six over the leg side, but the bowler struck back with a slower short ball that Fuller could only hit straight up in the air for the bowler to take a simple return catch.

But with the pressure ramped up and the crowd and both dugouts watching on nervously, Hampshire stalwart Dawson stepped up to seal the win.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, the Hawks’ Shan Masood starred with the bat, scoring 56 off 41 balls to see that a competitive total of 132 was posted.

Masood’s knock was the first half-century of the competition and earned him the Player-of-the-Match award.

He departed the scene in the final over, one of five wickets falling to Chappell.

Chappell had an impressive night, picking up both Tom Prest and Joe Weatherley in the fourth over of the match and then cleaning up the innings in the 19th over with the removal of Danny Briggs and Sonny Baker in consecutive deliveries to finish with the impressive figures of 5-23.
