GENEVA, CMC—In a collaborative effort, Caribbean Community (CARICOM) labor ministers convened on Monday with the Director General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Gilbert Houngbo, to discuss appropriate technical support within the ILO regional office for CARICOM States.
The meeting took place on the margins of the 112th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC). The regional ministers expressed their continued appreciation for the ILO’s support and suggested exploring methods to include skilled and qualified CARICOM nationals in opportunities within the ILO.
The CARICOM ministers and their labor commissioners raised the crucial issue of appropriate technical support within the ILO regional office to support the CARICOM States, which would include data collection, advancing the vital decent work agenda, the situation in Haiti, the Global Coalition for Social Justice, and targeted support and initiatives for the region.
Labor ministers from Guyana, the Bahamas, Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago attended the meeting.
Government, employer, and worker delegates from the ILO’s 187 member states are addressing various issues, including protecting workers against the effects of climate change and biological hazards, the care economy, and fundamental principles and rights at work.
The conference, which ends on June 14, will also elect members of the ILO Governing Body for the 2024-27 term of office.
