BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC—The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) has received two awards for its 40th Anniversary two-dollar Commemorative Banknote.
The note launched in Antigua and Barbuda on December 1, 2023, was awarded the 2023 ‘Bank Note of the Year’ by the International Bank Note Society (IBNS) and the ‘Best Limited Circulation/Commemorative Banknote’ by the International Association of Currency Affairs (IACA).
According to a press statement, the IBNS selected the note as the Bank Note of the Year from a pool of nearly 100 newly designed and widely circulated banknotes released in 2023.
The competition included notes from 15 countries across three continents—Africa, Asia, and South America—as well as five island nations and the Middle East.
“The EC$2 commemorative note was the overwhelming favorite from the onset of voting,” stated a release from ECCB, quoting IBNS.
In addition, the IACA named the commemorative note its Best Limited Circulation Commemorative Banknote, choosing it from among two other finalists in this category.
Governor Timothy N. J. Antoine, speaking on the ECCB’s weekly video program, ECCB Connects, expressed gratitude for the awards, stating, “These two awards encourage the management and staff of the ECCB to work even harder to serve the people of the currency union.”He noted that the commemorative note was the first issued by the central bank without the image of the British Monarch.
Designed and produced in collaboration with its currency partner, De La Rue, the note features the latest currency security and innovation while celebrating the region’s heritage.
It also includes a portrait of the legendary former West Indies cricketer Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards, known as ‘The Master Blaster.’
