SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, CMC—The Inter-American Court of Human Rights says it will hold its 166th Regular Session in Barbados from April 22-26, following an invitation from the Mia Mottley government.

The Inter-American Court is one of three regional human rights tribunals: the European Court of Human Rights and the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights. It is an autonomous legal institution that aims to interpret and apply the American Convention.

The Inter-American Court exercises three functions: a contentious function, which resolves contentious cases and supervises judgments; an advisory function; and a function, which allows it to order provisional measures.

The Court said that its 166th Session will be officially Inaugurated at 9:00 a.m. (local time) on April 22 at the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) and that an international seminar titled “Impact and Challenges of International Human Rights Law” will also be held on the opening day.

It said that a public hearing on the advisory opinion on “The Climate Emergency and Human Rights” will also take place. The Court will hold the first part of the public hearing on the Request for Advisory Opinion OC-32 on “The Climate Emergency and Human Rights” presented by Chile and Colombia from April 23 to 25.

It said submissions by 62 delegations will be heard during these three days.

Barbados, Suriname, and Haiti are the only Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries that have recognized the Court’s contentious jurisdiction.

The other countries are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.
