TORTOLA, British Virgin Islands, CMC – The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the BVI Airport Authority (BVIAA), Theodore Burke, says plans are being made to ensure that the territory secures a position as a leading tourism hotspot in the region.

Burke made a statement to the media in the wake of the recent abrupt closures of the Terrance B Lettsome International Airport and other airport facilities.

However, Burke has maintained that the Authority is steadfast in its commitment to propel aviation to new heights.

“The future of aviation is bright and in good hands,” the Chairman said. “Looking forward to the future, we have exciting projects and initiatives in the pipeline that will solidify the Virgin Islands’ position as a premier aviation hub in the Caribbean region,” Burke added that the ultimate goal has been that of positioning the territory as a beacon of excellence and innovation in the aviation sector.

In reflecting on recent incidents at the airport that forced several impromptu closures over the past two months, he said issues are being tackled head-on and promised to implement what he described as a robust contingency plan.

The board chairman explained that inadequate staffing to cover shifts forced the airport’s closure on two of the most recent occasions.

“Rest assured that these challenges have not been taken lightly,” Burke said. “And our team has tackled them head-on with an unwavering commitment to finding lasting solutions. Our team has since put operational contingencies in place and made significant strides in mitigating potential disruptions,” he said.
