BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Barbados airport authorities have confirmed that an unspecified threat aboard an aircraft with 190 passengers heading to the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) on Saturday had initiated a comprehensive security protocol.

GAIA spokesperson Sharleen Browne, in a statement on Saturday night, said that the control tower at the airport was alerted to an unspecified threat on board an aircraft scheduled to land here.

“Given the immediate proximity of the aircraft to our island, it was deemed unfeasible to reroute the flight to an alternate destination,” Browne said, adding that in response to this critical situation, the authorities had “initiated a comprehensive security protocol in collaboration with the Barbados Police Service and other relevant authorities.”

She said the primary focus had been the “safety and well-being of all 190 passengers and crew aboard the aircraft,” adding, “We are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to resolve this situation swiftly and securely.”

It is not immediately clear which airline was involved in the incident, but the airport authorities said that the “outgoing flight of the associated airline had been canceled.

“We understand the inconvenience this causes our valued passengers and are working diligently with the airline to provide alternative travel arrangements. All affected passengers have been notified and will be assisted by our customer service teams.

“We prioritize the safety of our passengers, crew, and staff. We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of everyone involved as we manage this situation. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” the authorities added.
