ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC—Grenada’s Olympic team will be greeted with much celebration when they return home from the Paris Olympics over the weekend.

A six-member team comprising Kirani James, Lindon Victor, Anderson Peters, and swimmers Halle Hazzard, Tilly Collymore, and Zachary Gresham captured two bronze medals at the recently concluded Olympics, their highest-ever medal haul.

Victor grabbed bronze in the men’s javelin, while Victor was third-best in the men’s decathlon.

James, Grenada’s first and only Olympic gold medalist, finished fifth in the men’s 400 meters.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Government of Grenada announced that ceremonies to honor the achievements and representation of all the country’s participants in the just-concluded Paris Olympics will occur on Saturday, August 17, and Sunday, August 18.
Peters, James, and Victor will arrive home on Saturday.

“The activities have been put in place to celebrate athletes who have brought glory and honor to our land,” said Acting Minister of Sports Delma Thomas.

“Let’s get together and be part of the grandest welcome ever as we celebrate Grenadian resilience and excellence,” she added, encouraging citizens throughout Grenada to organize and participate in their various communities, especially in Sunday’s events.

Government officials, executives of sports associations, and family members will greet the athletes, and Grenadians are invited to a greeting party outside the airport at 2 p.m.

The weekend’s activities will include a national motorcade on Sunday, August 18, beginning at Morne Rouge and a recognition rally at the La Sagesse Playing field.

Thomas said the La Sagesse rally will include some significant announcements regarding sports development. Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell will also unveil packages to honor all the Olympians in a unique address. The motorcade is set to begin at 9 a.m. and work its way westwards, passing through Gouyave, James’s hometown, and then down the east coast, including Soubise, Peters’s home village.

It will culminate at La Sagesse, in Victor’s home parish.
