WASHINGTON, CMC – The Haitian Bridge Alliance is calling on members of the Haitian diaspora and allies across the United States to urge Congress to protect Temporary Protected Status for Haitians urgently.
The appeal comes as debate gets underway in the House of Representatives on a discharge petition led by Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley to safeguard more than 300,000 Haitian nationals.
Executive Director of the Haitian Bridge Alliance, Guerline Jozef, says the moment is critical. “Lives, families, and entire futures hang in the balance,” she said, urging supporters to contact their representatives and demand action.
“TPS is not just a policy; it is a lifeline. It is protection. It is stability. It is dignity,” Jozef added.
Meanwhile, New York Attorney General Letitia James and a coalition of 18 attorneys general have filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in support of maintaining TPS for Haitians and Syrians.
James warned that ending the program would have serious consequences.
“Immigrants with TPS hold valuable roles in our communities as business owners, workers, teachers, and parents,” she said, adding that the move could tear families apart.
TPS has been in place for Haitians since 2010, allowing them to live and work legally in the United States.
Advocates say terminating the status would force hundreds of thousands to either remain in the country without legal protection or return to dangerous conditions, and would also impact key sectors such as healthcare.
