BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The ruling Barbados Labour Party (BLP) won the general election here after securing all 16 of the 30 seats that have so far been declared following Wednesday’s poll. Prime Minister Mia Mottley, who called the election a year in advance, is in line to sweep all 30 seats in Parliament, as she did on the last two occasions.
Mottley herself comfortably won her St. Michael North East seat, while the leader of the main opposition Democratic Labour Party (DLP), attorney Ralph Thorne, lost in the St. John’s constituency.
Thorne had been a member of the victorious BLP when it won the last general election, but crossed the floor to become Opposition Leader.
While 96 candidates representing six political parties and a few independents faced the electorate, the poll was always seen as a straight fight between the BLP and the DLP.
