WASHINGTON, CMC – The United States has reaffirmed the importance of its partnership with Belize, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulating Prime Minister John Briceño on his March 12 election victory.

US Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce said Rubio called Prime Minister Briceño on Monday “to reaffirm the importance of the US-Belizean partnership and congratulate him on his March 12 election.

“He recognized Belize’s significant efforts to counter illegal immigration, support Haitian security efforts, and combat transnational organized crime,” Bruce said, adding that Rubio and Briceño also discussed tariffs and Belizean commitment and engagement with both the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and Guatemala regarding the Sarstoon River.

“Secretary Rubio thanked Belize for its efforts as part of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission to Haiti,” Bruce said.

“Additionally, Secretary Rubio committed to working with Prime Minister Briceño to strengthen the investment climate for US firms in Belize,” adding that both parties expressed “their commitment to deepen the strong and cooperative relationship between the United States and Belize.”
