WASHINGTON, CMC – The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, will travel to Jamaica, Guyana, and Suriname later this week “to advance President Trump’s U.S. foreign policy priorities in the Caribbean,” the US State Department said Monday.

It said that the trip will take place March 26-27. While in Jamaica, Rubio will hold bilateral engagements with Prime Minister Barbados Mia Mottley, who is also the chair of the 15-member regional integration movement, CARICOM; Stuart Young, the Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister; and Fritz Alphonse Jean, the head of the transitional presidential council (CPT)in Haiti.

A statement issued by the Trinidad and Tobago government said that Prime Minister Young would “focus on US foreign policy and its effect on Trinidad and Tobago and the wider region” in his discussions with Rubio.

“Prime Minister Young believes the bilateral discussions provide a strategic opportunity to highlight the importance of the relationship between Trinidad and Tobago, CARICOM, and the United States and to focus on exploring areas for deepening cooperation.

“The Prime Minister notes that his meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State is in keeping with his undertaking to continue to engage in dialogue at the highest level of the United States administration for the benefit of all the people of Trinidad and Tobago,” said.

The State Department said Rubio’s engagements “with our valued Caribbean partners will promote regional cooperation to end illegal immigration, counter transnational organized crime, strengthen regional actions to address Haiti’s political and security challenges, and strengthen the United States’ economic partnerships with Caribbean countries.”
