PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Finance Minister Colm Imbert Friday warned the public “to a disturbing trend of fake Facebook profiles and fake social media accounts” being set up with variations of his name and matching photographs for fraudulent activity and scams.

In a statement, Imbert said eight fake Facebook accounts had been identified with “unauthorized photographs of the Minister, all attempting to either solicit money from unsuspecting persons or steal their digital identities through phishing scams.”

He said law enforcement is currently investigating the issue to determine the perpetrators. Still, while this investigation continues, he would like members of the public to be vigilant “towards these fake profiles and their suspicious activities.”

The Finance Minister urges the public to ignore “any” friend requests or messages and invitations from the social media platforms that appear to come from him.
