PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is on Friday commemorating the “historic milestone” of the 70th anniversary of women in policing, praising the “courageous group” who paved the way for generations of female officers.
“Seventy years ago, a few brave women stepped forward to serve; today, their courage lives on in every woman who wears this uniform and protects our nation,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Suzette Martin said in a statement to the media.
The TTPS said that 70 years on, women police officers “ proudly serve across every division and rank, contributing leadership, expertise, and unwavering dedication to policing and public safety”
Martin said that the 70th anniversary is both a celebration of progress and a call to action for the future:
“As we mark this milestone, we honour our pioneers and retirees who built a legacy of excellence. We recommit to empowering women in law enforcement, advancing leadership opportunities, and strengthening the bond between our officers and the communities we serve.”
The TTPS said that the anniversary celebrations will feature a formal Inauguration Ceremony, Dinner, and Awards Celebration, where pioneers, retirees, and outstanding officers will be honoured for their service, bravery, and contributions to policing.
The TTPS said it will also host a series of commemorative events highlighting its commitment to equality, professionalism, and innovation, with Martin noting that the anniversary coincides with the country’s 64th anniversary of political independence from Britain on Sunday.
“Happy Independence, Trinidad and Tobago! As we approach this historic day, we celebrate the courage, resilience, and unity of our people. Let us honour our past, cherish our present, and work together to build a future filled with peace, progress, and pride,” she added.
