PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Customs and Excise officers have seized over seven million dollars (One TT dollar=US$0.16 cents) in marijuana discovered at a transit shed in Central Trinidad.

In a statement, the Customs and Excise Division said that the illegal drugs were found on August 22 and that officers attached to the Customs’ Preventive branch were alerted to a shipment which originated from Miami, Florida.

It said inspection led to the seizure of 55 packages of marijuana, concealed within banquet chair seats. The discovered substance weighed 30.32 kilogrammes with an estimated street value of approximately TT$7,570,904.

The Customs and Excise Division stated that it aims to reaffirm its commitment to securing the country’s borders against the illicit narcotics trade and other forms of smuggling.

Meanwhile, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said four men have appeared before a Master of the High Court, charged with conspiracy to traffic marijuana.

The police stated that the Master of the Court, Adia Mohammed, has since issued a Warrant of Apprehension for a fifth man, an expatriate suspect, while denying bail to Malique Nero, also known as ‘Fatboy’, when he appeared before the District High Court on August 25.

The other three accused, Kemo Tayes, also known as ‘Jockey’, Jerry Sougie, also known as ‘Piper/Yankee’, and Ronald Springer, also known as ‘DanDan’, were each granted bail with surety for TT$200,000, and the matter was adjourned to September 3.

The police said that the charges arose from investigations that started on August 6, into an alleged Conspiracy to Traffic Marijuana by members of an organised crime group in Arima, east of here, led by an expatriate suspect.
