SCARBOROUGH, Tobago, CMC – The Office of the Chief Secretary has confirmed that a 71-year-old Grenadian national has drowned and a British national sustained injury following “the series of incidents” that occurred here on Sunday.
In a statement, the Office of the Chief Secretary said that the 71-year-old Grenadian national “tragically drowned” at the Bucco Reef Marine Park. It did not disclose his name.
“Medical care is being provided to the injured individual who is stable and expected to make a full recovery,” it said, adding that the British national is being assisted by his wife, who is also here.
The statement quoted Chief Secretary, Farley Augustine, as being in “active discussions” with the Consular Officer, Grenada Trade and Economic Commissioner, Elwyn McQuilkin, to contact the next of kin of the deceased and provide necessary support.
It said that Farley has also spoken to the British High Commissioner, Jon Mark Dean, regarding he welfare of the injured British national.
“Further details about the deceased will be disclosed once the next of kin has been contacted,” it said, adding that the authorities are providing “trauma counselling to the friends of the deceased and injured who are visiting Tobago”.
Media reports said that the Grenadian national, who had recently retired in the United Kingdom and was visiting his friends in Tobago, died while desperately trying to rescue a friend who had fallen overboard.
The reports said that in the rescue effort, the Grenadian was struck by the boat’s propeller, which severed one of his legs, causing him to bled to death, despite attempts to save him.
