CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – The St. Lucia government Thursday confirmed that it had formally received communication from the United Kingdom government advising that a visa requirement will be introduced for its nationals travelling to the United Kingdom.
London said that St. Lucian travellers would require a transit visa for transiting through the United Kingdom to another destination. The new measures go into effect immediately.
According to the March 4, 2026 correspondence from the UK Home Office, the decision was taken as part of the United Kingdom’s broader efforts to strengthen border management and respond to pressures within its immigration and asylum systems.
London said that there has been a “notable increase in St. Lucian nationals entering the UK as visitors and subsequently claiming asylum, which it says has placed pressure on its border and asylum processes”.
The UK authorities have advised that the new visa requirement goes into effect as of Thursday and that a six-week transition period will be in place until April 16, 2026, during which St. Lucian nationals who already possess an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) and have booked travel before the policy change may continue to enter the United Kingdom visa-free if they arrive before the end of the transition window.
The St. Lucia government said that it “acknowledges that this development will be of concern to many of its nationals, “including those who travel to the United Kingdom for family visits, business, education, and tourism.
“The Government wishes to reassure citizens that active diplomatic engagement with the United Kingdom is ongoing, and that St. Lucia will continue discussions with UK authorities to understand the decision better and to explore pathways for maintaining strong mobility arrangements between both countries”.
The Phillip J Pierre administration said that it “will provide further guidance to the public on visa application procedures and travel requirements as additional information becomes available.”
The United Kingdom has also implemented a similar visa restriction for Dominica.
