PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – The technical advisory committee (TAC) of the Barbados-based Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) will meet here later this month.

The TAC, which has an advisory role, including on issues related to resource mobilization strategies, work program revision, and program development, usually meets once a year before the start of the hurricane season, which begins in June.

Speaking ahead of the April 17-21 meeting, the National Coordination Center for Disaster Management (NCCR) coordinator, Jerry Slijngard, said with the support of CDEMA, Suriname is setting up a national logistics system for disaster management.

“A lot of technical discussions will take place during the TAC meeting. These are important for Suriname to develop policy in disaster management,” he said, adding that the decentralization of CDEMA will be one of the critical topics during the 14th TAC meeting.

CDEMA, established in 1991, is the regional intergovernmental agency for disaster management within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Its main task is coordinating emergency relief and relief efforts for participating countries facing disasters.
