Brazilian accused of killing girlfriend faces lengthy jail term in Suriname

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – The Public Prosecution Service (OM) is seeking an 18-year jail term for a 41-year-old Brazilian national, who has been charged with killing and concealing the body of 35-year-old Lucena de Moreira, with whom he had a love affair.

The OM said that the case against Carlos L. has been legally and convincingly proven that he took the life of his Brazilian girlfriend at their home on September 16, 2024, and that CCTV footage shows that the victim arrived home with the suspect that evening and was not seen again.

It said that during the early morning hours of the following day, the direction of a security camera was changed, after which the suspect walked to the garage with an object that appeared to be a human torso and left in a vehicle.

The court heard that the victim’s body, dressed only in underwear, was found two days later and that a pathological examination revealed that the woman died of suffocation due to strangulation.

The suspect’s DNA was found on her nail, and the suspect also had scratch marks on his body. Blood traces were also found in both his home and the vehicle he was driving.

The court was told that on September 18, in the afternoon, Carlos L. reported De Moreira missing to the police, who found it unusual that someone would report the woman missing when her decomposing body had recently been found.

The prosecution said that based on the facts and circumstances, the Major Crimes Unit designated him as a suspect and arrested him immediately.

The court heard that shortly after the crime, the Brazilian pawned the victim’s jewelry at a gold-buying company.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, these actions, combined with the other evidence, point to an attempt by Carlos L. to cover up his actions and conceal his crime.

In addition to the prison sentence, the prosecution has requested the forfeiture of a mortgage certificate worth US$1,725, the restitution of personal property to the suspect, the surrender of the vehicle to the owner, and the return of the jewelry to the victim’s relatives.
