PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – The National Assembly Tuesday approved the Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Prevention and Combating Act even as some legislators walked out during the voting process.
National Democratic Party (NDP) faction leader, Rabin Parmessar, said that in the country’s interests, part of the group voted in favor of the legislation and that some dissatisfied members left the Chambers during the vote.
Justice and Police Minister Kenneth Amoksi announced that the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF) would assess the situation here in February next year instead of November as originally scheduled.
But several legislators called on the government to prioritize tightening the laws criminalizing money laundering and terrorism financing and international sanctions.
Further, several legislators, including the NDP’s Stephen Tsang and Ebu Jones, strongly disagreed with Amoksi’s answers to questions. Tsang noted that he had asked 28 questions and received only one response.
Jones argued that he had highlighted various technical matters that the minister still needed to address.
