PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – Haitian Prime Minister Dr. Ariel Henry is heading an official delegation to Suriname as the Dutch-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country celebrates its 48th anniversary of political independence from the Netherlands.
Henry, who has taken over the leadership of the French-speaking CARICOM country following the July 7, 2021, assassination of President Jovenel Moise, will meet with President Chandrikapersad Santokhi.
Santokhi is among CARICOM leaders seeking to resolve Haiti’s ongoing socio-economic and political situation amid calls for fresh elections.
Earlier this week, the CARICOM Eminent Persons Group (EPG) said it would provide a draft framework of accord for the consideration by the various stakeholders in Haiti even as it acknowledged that the country “continues to hurt.”
The EPG members paid their third visit to Haiti during the period November 8-14, holding discussions with the various stakeholders to find a political compromise to stabilize the country and promote a democratic transition.
Henry’s delegation to Haiti includes Defence Minister Enold Joseph, Commerce and Industry Minister Ricardin St-Jean, and private sector representatives.
The delegation will hold several security, trade, and agriculture meetings.
Meanwhile, CARICOM Secretary-General Dr Carla Barnett has sent a congratulatory message to President Santokhi: “This milestone in your nation’s history marks the triumph of self-determination and freedom, as evidenced by the remarkable progress made by the Republic of Suriname since achieving independence.
“The national commitment to the tenets of Justice, Faith, and Loyalty, and the unwavering spirit of resilience and dedication have provided a solid foundation for progress towards securing a prosperous future.”
She said CARICOM continues to benefit from the meaningful contributions made by Suriname to the regional integration movement.
She said Paramaribo, notably in its lead role for Community Development and Cultural Cooperation, has promoted regional cohesion by playing a vital role in societal development in critical areas.
“The Community welcomes the continued commitment of the Republic of Suriname as we work together to address common challenges and advance the region’s sustainable development goals.”
