SURINAME-CRIME-Guyanese nationals linked to the murder of shopkeeper

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, Suriname police have detained five people, including four believed to be Guyanese nationals, as they continue their investigations into the murder of 53-year-old shopkeeper Yuanlan Chen.

The Police Public Relations said that the three Guyanese nationals, between the ages of 15 and 18, were in the country illegally and that a 30-year-old taxi driver had also been arrested on Monday.

The authorities said that when the five suspects were detained, one reportedly threw out an object that later turned out to be a gun with six cartridges.

They said the taxi driver’s vehicle and the weapon had been seized. Following consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, the four illegal Guyanese suspects, and the taxi driver has been arrested and will be charged by the police.

Police said Chen was shot and killed on December 14, and they are appealing to eyewitnesses to contact the Capital Offenses Department as the investigation continues.
