The New Democratic Party has welcomed the official announcement of the general election date, confirming readiness to contest all seats.

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – The leader of the main opposition New Democratic Party (NDP), Dr. Godwin Friday, has welcomed the November 27 date for the general elections here, saying “this is indeed a wonderful day, and we have waited for a long time.

“We have come, finally, to this moment when the people of this country will once again have the opportunity, the sacred obligation, to choose as to the future of our country,” said Friday, who will be leading the opposition party for a second occasion in a general election.

Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, 79, who is seeking an unprecedented sixth consecutive victory for his ruling Unity Labor Party (ULP), announced the date for the elections on Tuesday night during a “Labor Strong Rally” in the capital, Kingstown.

Gonsalves said that the Parliament has been dissolved with immediate effect, and nomination day is scheduled for November 10.

Friday, 66, told supporters that the election will be held on a day before a Friday, saying, “Well, it’s Friday in more ways than one. What a wonderful night. This is a wonderful time.”

“The weeping may endure for a night, but the joy comes in the morning, and in particular, it comes on a Friday morning, when we will have a new government in St Vincent and the Grenadines,” said Friday, who has been representing the Northern Grenadines since 2001.

“On November 27, we must make a choice to deepen that independence, and that choice comes from replacing a government,” he said, noting that the NDP has identified four pillars –tourism, agriculture, the blue economy, and the new economy to take the country forward.
