DERBYSHIRE, England, CMC -English League Two side Chesterfield FC has secured the signing of St Lucian defender Janoi Donacien.

The 31-year-old Donacien, who arrives on a free transfer, has signed a contract with the Spireites until the end of the season and will wear the number 44 shirt.

The versatile defender, who has four caps for St Lucia, can play across the back four and has a proven track record in English football.

He was instrumental in Ipswich Town’s promotion to the Championship two seasons ago and played a key role in Accrington Stanley’s League Two title-winning campaign 2018.

Donacien expressed his excitement at reuniting with manager Paul Cook, under whom he played at Portman Road in 2021.

“It feels good to have it all done, and I’m ready to go. I’ve been in contact with the gaffer and Kieron Dyer for a while, and they’ve kept tabs on me. Paul Cook brought me back in and helped me a lot. It will be good to play under him again.”

Although Donacien’s appearances were limited last season due to injury, he remains highly regarded. After Ipswich’s promotion to the Premier League, the club invited him to continue training during his recovery from groin surgery despite being out of contract last summer.

Chesterfield are currently 10th in League Two with 34 points from 24 games.
