CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – Police are searching for those responsible for the murder of a woman in the southern town of Vieux Fort on Sunday night, as the killings continue following the murders of three people, including a two-year-old toddler on Saturday night that both government and opposition have condemned
Police have not yet released information on the latest murder, but media reports said that the woman, whom they have identified as the mother of a “marked man” of the town, was gunned down while lying on her bed at around 10.pm (local time) on Sunday.
On Saturday evening, a man succumbed to gunshot injuries at Cedar Heights, and a short time later, a woman and her two-year-old grandson were shot dead in the beds.
Meanwhile, the organizers of a “Family Fun and Sports” day scheduled for Easter have postponed the event.
The government has sought the assistance of the Barbados-based Regional Security System (RSS) in preserving law and order in Vieux Fort following a spate of murders, and the non-government organization (NGO), “The Vieux Fort Rising Again” had planned the activity in a bid to help end the violence.
“After extensive consultation with supporters, volunteers, and partners, the Vieux Fort Rising Again campaign has decided to postpone Monday’s event,” the BGO said in a statement.
“This decision is also out of respect to those who lost their lives during shootings on Saturday evening,” it said, adding the public would be provided with further updates while declaring, “‘Vieux Fort will rise again.’
Prime Minister Phillip J Pierre said that even as the country mourns “this tragedy, we must not cower to these monsters,” adding, “We must come together as a nation to address these senseless reprisal killings.”
Opposition Leader Allen Chastanet described the murders as “heartless and callous.”
