CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC -Opposition Leader Allen Chastanet Tuesday said he is “deeply honored” to have been appointed to the board of the International Democrat Union (IDU), a global alliance committed to advancing the values of freedom, democracy, and human dignity.
“This appointment is not about me; it’s a reflection of what St. Lucia and the Caribbean can offer the world. We may be small in size, but we are mighty in spirit, in ideas, and in our unwavering belief in a better tomorrow,” Chastanet said in a statement posted on his Facebook page.
“I look forward to working with leaders from around the world to continue championing freedom, dignity, and opportunity for all,” he added.
The opposition United Workers Party (UWP) said Chastanet’s appointment is a tremendous honor and that “he now joins a select group of global leaders working together to advance the principles of democracy, freedom, and good governance across the world.”
The Germany-based IDU is an alliance of 84 center-right political parties from 65 countries. It was founded in 1983 as the umbrella organization for the European Democrat Union (EDU), the Caribbean Democrat Union (CDU), and the Asia-Pacific Democratic Union (APDU).
“Chastanet’s selection to its leadership is a testament to his vision, experience, and credibility on the international stage. As one of the few leaders from the Caribbean to hold such a position, he brings a critical regional voice to global conversations on development, leadership, and democratic integrity,” the UWP said.
