KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC—Netball Jamaica has unveiled the 15-member Sunshine Girls squad for the upcoming three-match Sunshine Series against South Africa, which will take place in Kingston on January 18, 22, and 25 at the National Indoor Sports Centre (NISC).
Star defender Shamera Sterling Nembhard will captain the squad, which features a mix of seasoned players and emerging talent who will vie for the Margaret Beckford Trophy.
This announcement follows the Sunshine Girls’ impressive 2-1 series victory over England in the recently concluded Horizon Series, where they secured the Rhone Hornsby Trophy.
The year-end World Netball Rankings positioned Jamaica as the third-best team globally, behind only Australia and New Zealand. England follows closely at fourth, with South Africa rounding out the top five.
The Sunshine Girls will aim to retain their ranking by overcoming South Africa in this series, as their rivals will also face England in the Quad Series in February 2025.
The squad includes one debutant, Brie Grierson, a player for Nottingham Forest Netball in the English Super League. Grierson, who qualifies for Jamaica through her father, brings fresh talent to the team.
Coach Sasher-Gaye Henry expressed confidence in the squad while acknowledging the challenge South Africa poses.
“We are pleased with the team selected. Shimona’s return strengthens our attacking circle, and her synergy with Shanice, who excelled in the Horizon Series, will be key. Our defensive trio of Shamera, Jodi-Ann, and Latanya is world-class, and the balance between experienced players and emerging talent will support our long-term goals for global tournaments in 2026 and 2027.”
Captain Sterling Nembhard urged fans to turn out in large numbers to support the Sunshine Girls.
“The energy during the Horizon Series was incredible. Playing at home with fans in the stands, pot covers, and all was a tremendous boost for us. We look forward to feeling that love and support again in January.”
The Sunshine Series will begin on January 18 with matches involving the Under-21 and Senior teams of Jamaica and South Africa. The midweek game will occur on January 22, followed by the finale showdown on January 25.
The team’s coaching and support staff include Head Coach Sasher-Gaye Henry, Specialist Intern Kurt Dale, Manager Maureen Brown with assistant Roxan Long, physiotherapists Othneil Lamont and Orianna Blackwood, and Team Doctor Dr Michelle Holt.
