Bahia Principe resort in Jamaica reopens as workers return following extensive hurricane damage repairs

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Hundreds of workers are back on the job following the reopening of the Bahia Principe Runaway Bay hotel, months after Hurricane Melissa heavily damaged the resort.

The property resumed operations last Wednesday, restoring more than 660 rooms to Jamaica’s tourism stock and marking a major step in the sector’s recovery.

Managing Director Jonay Guerra said the reopening reflects the resilience and determination that drove the hotel’s restoration after the Category 5 storm struck last October.

“In the aftermath of the hurricane, the damage was evident everywhere, but so too was the resolve to rebuild and move forward,” Guerra said.

He described the reopening as more than just a return to business, calling it a renewed commitment to Jamaica and its people.

“Jamaica has never been just a destination for us, but a partner,” he added, noting the resort’s ongoing role in supporting livelihoods and sustainable development.

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett said the reopening has brought approximately 800 employees back to work, calling it a strong sign of investor confidence and collaboration.

“This is the kind of partnership between the private sector, the State and the people that drives recovery,” Bartlett said.

He noted that the rapid restoration was significant given the scale of damage and initial plans that could have delayed full operations.

“Six hundred and sixty-four rooms are now back in circulation—welcoming visitors, creating experiences, and driving economic activity across communities,” he said.

Director of Tourism Donovan White said the reopening adds to growing momentum in the sector, with strong demand continuing from key markets.

“Jamaica is open, Jamaica is ready, and we are welcoming the world with the authentic hospitality that defines us,” White said.
