KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Police say they have not ruled out any motive in the death of the 20-year-old University of the West Indies (UWI) student, Victoria Brown Hanley, whose body was found in her room on Thursday.
Police said that her roommate had discovered the body lying face down with a scarf wrapped tightly around her neck.
The student, a Jamaican national, and according to the head of Jamaica Constabulary Area Four, Assistant Commissioner Michael Phipps, investigators are taking statements and interviewing people as well as viewing CCTV footage.
Phipps said the police are awaiting a post-mortem report, which will be critical in determining the cause of death.
Deputy principal of the Mona campus, Dr Tomlin Paul, told the Jamaica Observer that there was deep regret over the death.
“We regret that we have lost one of our students this morning…it’s an unfortunate loss for us. We are currently with the police doing the investigations,” said Paul, adding that the university has mobilized its support systems for students affected by the tragedy.
