KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) Friday appealed for calm as more bomb threats were made against schools on the island.

“The police know that more schools have been receiving bomb threats today, Friday, November 10. Investigations continued throughout the day yesterday, and detectives reaffirm that all evidence suggests that the threats are a hoax,” the JCF said in a brief statement.

It urged people who receive bomb threats to remain calm and report them to the local police, encouraging them to take their safety seriously.

No one has been arrested in connection with the threats.

The Ministry of National Security said that security forces have responded to 45 reports of bomb threats over the last 24 hours, targeting schools, health facilities, and courts.

“While we are grateful that these were not actual threats, we must emphasize the significant strain such incidents place on our law enforcement resources, which are already in high demand,” the ministry said, noting that all the incidents have turned out to be hoaxes.

“The repercussions of these hoaxes are far-reaching, affecting the daily lives of many. They cause unwarranted fear, anxiety, and significant disruption to essential services and public order. We strongly condemn these acts of misinformation and false reporting,” it said, appealing to everyone to refrain from participating in or propagating such hoaxes.

The ministry warns that those engaging in such activities will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

On Thursday, classes at several schools were disrupted after bomb threats were issued to the institutions via email. Emergency services were called to schools in the Corporate Area, St. Catherine, Clarendon, and Trelawny.

“Investigators are urging school officials and other members of the public to remain calm, as preliminary investigations indicate that bomb threats received at several schools are a hoax,” Education and Youth Fayval Williams said the ministry is continuing to monitor the situation, adding “the security and safety of our students, teachers, and staff is of the utmost importance”.a
