KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC—The Jamaica government on Monday named two veteran diplomats as its envoys to Belgium and the 15-member Caribbean Community (CARICOM) grouping.
“Both diplomats have demonstrated exceptional dedication to public service and bring decades of experience advancing Jamaica’s foreign policy objectives. I have full confidence in their ability to navigate complex international environments, build strategic partnerships and effectively advocate for Jamaica’s interests,” Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister, Kamina Johnson Smith, said.
The government named Diedre Mills ambassador-designate to the Kingdom of Belgium and head of mission to the European Union and Ambassador Esmond Reid the country’s plenipotentiary representative to CARICOM.
Mills is a career diplomat with more than 25 years in the Jamaican Foreign Service and has held several senior assignments, including as Jamaica’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) in New York and deputy high commissioner at the Jamaican High Commission in London.
Reid has over thirty years of diplomatic experience and a strong background in trade negotiations and multilateral affairs. He recently served as high commissioner to Nigeria and was concurrently accredited to several West and Central African countries.
The two diplomats are expected to take up their postings within the coming weeks.
