KINGSTON, Jamaica, The Jamaica Council of Churches (JCC) has called on churches islandwide to do more to engage children in spiritually uplifting activities.

The call comes amidst the increasing number of children who have lost their lives tragically.

According to JCC General Secretary, Reverend Newton Dixon, Jamaica’s children are being gunned down, they are fatally stabbed, they are dying in motor vehicle crashes, and some have also committed suicide.

Dixon says that although the government continues to work on strategies to keep children safe, the church must also seek to intervene.

“We believe in the spiritual realities of existence, and I think churches can do more in praying for but praying with children … They need to feel and experience our prayers…”

He said some tragedies result from spiritual influences and should be fought through spiritual strategies.

“We hear horrific stories of children being killed, and then there’s a knee-jerk reaction, and everyone becomes hypersensitive. I hope that we not only talk about it but also find ways to coordinate and create a culture of support for children.”

Dixon also said Jamaica should not wait until news emerges of children’s deaths to act, and all sectors of society must take more proactive measures.
