KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) has launched an investigation into an incident on Sunday in which a US-bound flight was forced to make an emergency landing at Sangster International Airport shortly after take-off.

It’s reported that a Spirit Airlines Flight was destined for Fort Lauderdale, Florida when the pilot told over 200 passengers to brace for an emergency landing after the aircraft developed mechanical problems.

Speaking with Radio Jamaica News on Monday, the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority chairman, Lieutenant Colonel Oscar Derby, said he received a report on the incident.

“What happened is that after taking off from Montego Bay, the pilot experienced a pressurization problem…. He opted to declare an emergency and to return to Montego Bay airport, which he did. Upon approaching the airport, he would have had the passengers prepare for the emergency landing. He landed safely, and the airplane, until late yesterday (Sunday), was still at the airport,” said Derby who also highlighted the proactive response of Spirit Airlines in arranging alternative flights for the passengers.

He reiterated that the JCAA is actively investigating and will release the aircraft when it determines that “all is safe for it to go.”
